ALIAS: Koschei

AU BACKGROUND: "In a city by the sea which was once called St. Petersburg, then Petrograd, then Leningrad, then, much later, St. Petersburg again…"
Koschei was born in 1972 in St. Petersburg, which was of course not St. Petersburg at the time. That means he's 19 when the USSR dissolves. Up until that point, things are pretty humdrum. He lived in a communal apartment, he was a Young Pioneer, etc. It's the Era of Stagnation. The economy is static and growth is down. There's also the stuff with hitting puberty and figuring out he's a mutant, but Koschei was a clever kid. It probably helps that his powers can make him look like a model citizen! He flew under the radar. Enter Koschei's teenage years: glasnost, calls for democratization and transparency in government, etc.
He attends Leningrad State University/St. Petersburg State University for English and international law, and after graduation assumes a position with the International Affairs section of the university maintaining surveillance on the student body. Later he serves in the Tax Ministry, then as a chairman on a mayoral committee in Saint Petersburg (shorthand: a deputy chairman to Putin). For several years he is married! Often to different women. We will not concern ourselves with the various awful affairs of Koschei Bessmertny.
Somewhere in there he completes postgraduate studies in counterintelligence. He's working his way up through the Defense Ministry and pushing for military reform, when someone outs him as a mutant in order to further their own career, c. 2008. Koschei steps down, absconds, and spends two years in Montreux, Switzerland, working with an international mutant relief nonprofit and eventually X-Odus. Circa the liberation, he moves to Genosha and gets involved in government affairs there.
There's a lot more stuff in this but unless you are a mod you cannot see it!
PERSONALITY: Koschei in mythology is this grim wizard-king; Koschei in Deathless is also a grim wizard-king, except he's grim wizard-king as tragic hero rather than villain. He's sort of the archetypal smoldering hero, and goes pretty far to cultivate an air of both refinement and savagery. Several characters in the book describe him as cruel, in the sense that he will belittle you, sure, or completely steamroll you out of self-interest… but he's also cruel to those he loves. One of his biggest flaws is obsession. When he wants a thing, he takes it, no matter what anyone else has to say about it; when he's done with it, it goes in the trash. (In the book he steals away Marya when she is sixteen years old. Then she discovers a factory full of all the other women he's kidnapped. He presses them into indentured servitude after he's done with them. What the fuck, Koschei!)
In Genosha, expect him to live a life that's strangely austere but ALSO excessive. He'll blaze through expensive things, booze, women, then banish them all from his life and decide from here on out he'll finally be abstinent. It never lasts long. I imagine this doesn't make him very many friends. Aside from the part where he goes out of his way to be charismatic, often by using his powers, he's just weird and aloof and mean. No one can stand working under him, because if he's not on a huge Gordon Ramsay shitfit he's building up to one. There's probably a huge rate of turnover in his office. He's domineering, too-- he's gone through several wives by now, all of whom are quite happy to call him overwhelming. He'll dress impeccably, make advances, then spurn them just as quickly as they were offered up.
APPEARANCE: She had not known before that she wanted all these things, that she preferred dark hair and a slightly cruel expression, that she wished for tallness, or that a man kneeling might thrill her. A whole young life’s worth of slowly collected predilections coalesced in a few moments within her, and Koschei Bessmertney, his lashes full of snow, became perfect.
Yo I am not even going to gloss this over Koschei is supposed to be really attractive, and in Genosha it's probably partially because of his powers of suggestion. Otherwise he is tall, dark-haired, and indeterminately middle-aged.
POWERS: Telepath with emphasis on illusion and mind control via subconscious suggestion, against better judgment and the target's will-- hypnosis, if you will! Also has a healing factor.
